Advent 2025, Day 11
Day 11, December 10, 2025
Theme: Peace
Readings:
Reflections:
In addition to obedience and hard work, Peace requires awareness. Notice I didn't say understanding. We must remain aware of who God is and what he has done. God is so beyond understanding. But we can certainly practice awareness of his creation, as Isaiah 40 indicates. God fuels us, inspires us, sustains sunrises and sunsets, and gives power to people who practice Hope. Peace, regaining and maintaining it, is hard work. It's like a soul workout. God himself hydrates hope! This allows for development from weakness to strength. How often are you doing spiritual workouts? Which of the following spiritual "muscles" might need attention in your life this Advent season: Disciplines of Abstinence (solitude, silence, fasting, frugality, chastity, secrecy, and sacrifice) and Disciplines of Engagement (study, worship, celebration, service, prayer, fellowship, confession, and submission). Pick any spiritual discipline and as you practice it, your awareness of who God is and what he has done will grow. The more that happens, the greater the peace in your soul.
In the reading in Matthew today, Jesus calls out, literally saying he is our strength, our rest, our sustenance. He's got our spiritual growth covered! Our work is to foster awareness and sit in it. Thus, this Advent series. By the way, as I think about the passage in Matthew, it reminds me how I love reading Jesus talking about himself. Just as He often did, Jesus cuts through all complexity and offers a foundational truth, declaring in John 14:6 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life.'

Bonus! My Advent 2025 playlist is ready for you to listen to on Apple Music. It's diverse, and it was so much fun to put together as I read through the scriptures and wrote this series.

NOTE the songs are on Apple Music, which you can get for a month for free if you are new... I just didn't want an obnoxious YouTube Ad ruining your quiet time :-)
