Advent 2025, Day 8

Day 8, December 7, 2025

Theme: Second Sunday of Advent (Peace)

Readings:

Reading 1: Isa 11:1-10 Responsorial Psalm: Ps 72:1-17 Reading 2: Rom 15:4-9 Gospel: Mt 3:1-12

Reflections:

Sundays are going to have a few more scriptures, but enjoy them throughout the day, no pressure to read them all in one sitting.

Light two candles a day starting today and notice the difference from only having one candle. This beautiful tradition of sitting with one more candle per week is so simple and effective to illustrate the growing anticipation for the Messiah from Genesis to the New Testament. Let the light of the candles hold your attention awhile.

The first passage today is a reminder of the overlap of Hope and Peace. Isaiah 11 is a beautiful passage we now need to reconsider through the lens of Peace.. What evidence of Peace strikes you in the Isaiah passage?

Psalm 72 is all about the peace that comes from everyone knowing that God is both totally just and completely loving. This passage reminds us that the imbalances of power will be set right. The oppressed will be able to breathe and know there is justice in the world.

Romans again highlights the overlap of themes of peace and hope.

In Matthew, we see John the Baptist's fiery personality was needed to clear the way for peace. Peace follows conflict and confrontation. What do you need to confront in yourself, to repent of, or admit, to "produce fruit in keeping with repentance"? About what do you need another perspective so you can truly change or repent? Praying for Peace begins with praying about the lack of peace in ourselves and our families. We must confront and engage areas that lack peace. We need to see the impact if we are to truly and fully repent. What is preventing peace? Make a list and beg God for whatever might be needed, be it repentance, perspective, support, or resolve to deal with these areas with godly zeal.

I hope you enjoy the song today; I'd never heard of an Advent song about John the Baptist until the day I wrote this devotional. I chose the children's version so you could really hear and think about the lyrics. If you know of other songs about John the Baptist, please comment below and widen our perspective!

Bonus! My Advent 2025 playlist is ready for you to listen to on Apple Music. It's diverse, and it was so much fun to put together as I read through the scriptures and wrote this series.

NOTE the songs are on Apple Music, which you can get for a month for free if you are new... I just didn't want an obnoxious YouTube Ad ruining your quiet time :-)
