Day 15: Servant

March 6

Readings:

Jer 18:18-20

Matt 20:17-28

Reflection:

Both scriptures in today's reading offer a sobering picture of the work of someone who would like to be a pastor or preacher...or a leader of any kind, for that matter.  Leading others is not for the faint of heart.  It is pure serving.

Jeremiah did his best to offer a good example and tell the truth, and his peers threw him into a pit.

Today's scriptures are clear and simple. Doing good and living well is hard.  Anyone who tells you otherwise is not in touch with reality. Wisdom and contentment (the key foci of this whole urenuf.life effort) are pretty words that cost you in real life if you truly want them.  No coupons, no discount codes. Put in the work, suffer, and turn to God in the pain.

Jesus served so clearly, worked so hard, and healed so many...and yet, he was overwhelmed with dread and crucified because Jesus' words cut the religious leaders of his day too deeply, and Pontius Pilate abdicated responsibility to uphold justice in the face of pressure from an angry crowd.

To be clear, it's hard.  But it is so worth it to have our children look at us with pride, knowing we tell the truth, fail, work hard, apologize, make amends, and do the work.  It is worth it when we engage the hurting and oppressed.  We have no idea how much we have served others while hurting.

Let's lean into discomfort in Lent. Let's fast, let's pray more than normal. Let us serve God and others.
