*NEW* Read today's scriptures, then check out the beauty of this reflection, as it is read over a series of beautiful landscapes HERE.
During this season of Lent, I have tried to tap into silence and solitude in an effort to hear God’s voice. These scriptures we read highlight that silence and solitude are not about "empty" time, but about creating a "house" or space where God's presence and promises can take root. In my effort to honor God, as a human, I want to do something. These passages propose that my intentional withdrawal is a way to stop doing and start receiving God’s work. David wanted to build (i.e., do something). God said, “No.” God reminded David that when he was out in the fields, He was there. God doesn’t require a fancy house; He just wants our presence, and He promises an eternal “house” (lineage or legacy). My silence and solitude allow a shift from my habitual “doing” to God’s eternal work.
Joseph’s silence and acceptance also allowed for God’s work to come to fruition. Joseph’s silence is quite an example of faith and obedience. The scripture in Matthew 1:23 ends with “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). Being alone is the best way to feel God’s presence and realize that I am actually not forsaken.
Lastly, all this silence and solitude are not easy for me, because my introverted brain is constantly racing with thoughts, ideas, questions, and analyses of conversations. Dr. Laurie Helgoe says "Quiet is might, Solitude is strength, and Introversion is power."
Real strength comes from listening to God, not from my own busy work. Solitude and strength are like Joseph and his strength to do the right thing that came from a quiet moment where we listen to our "dreams" or inner guidance. Introversion is power: This is the ability to process deeply and act with intention rather than just reacting to the world.
Prayer:
"God, help me stop trying so hard and start listening.
Let me find my strength in Your words, not in my own busy work.
Amen."
