The adulterous woman was caught in the act, and the self-righteous men wanted to stone her. How did Jesus respond? With silence. I don’t know about you, but silence is not the first emotion that surfaces when I see someone being bullied. This example of Jesus being silent and using wisdom to tug at accusers' hearts is challenging. Jesus is modeling a ‘holy silence’ that he wants me to imitate during my battle for silence and solitude in this Lent season. His silence creates a space or a gap where the accusers are forced to look at their own hearts instead of the woman’s sin.
Lent is about creating that same gap in my life through prayer so I can see myself clearly. Making this space to examine my own heart and pray to God to remove the things that do not reflect Him (anger, unforgiveness, insecurity, shame, etc.). Lent is about letting God mend the broken pieces within me. The story ends with the woman in a moment of solitude (alone) with Jesus. When she was at her lowest, Jesus stood by her. He forgave her. He told her to go and sin no more. Lent is not about feeling bad about our sin, but about going and not sinning. Sounds impossible, right? Well, all things are possible with God. (Matthew 19:26)
Prayer:
Without your Word, I would be lost.
Thank you for the beauty of snow and sunshine.
Holy Spirit, guide my heart, my mind, and my soul as I practice silence and solitude.
I open my mind and heart to your presence.
Let me hear your voice.
Amen.
