Day 36: False Silence vs True Silence

Reflection:
The Lord sent Isaiah to tell King Ahaz to ask for a sign. Ahaz refused to call on God under the pretense of belief and trust in God. However, the reality was that Ahaz did not want God’s input; he wanted to handle his problems his way. I am guilty of seeking confirmation bias. I am guilty praying but not surrendering. I have been Ahaz and have made religious excuses and avoided relationship with the Holy Spirit in order to do what I think is best. This is the false silence that Ahaz was demonstrating.
God sent an angel to speak to Mary. He told her she was going to be a mother and the scripture says she was greatly troubled and wondered. Wondering implies silence and contemplation on the Word of God. Mary, sitting in the quiet of her simple home, demonstrated true silence and surrender. This is one of the goals of Lent--to sit in silence and solitude so that we meditate on God’s word and not rush into a shallow answer.
Prayer:
Lord God Almighty, you give us hope.
You are merciful and full of grace.
May your truth and faithfulness guide my days.
Holy Spirit, give us the strength to fight against the idols that lead us away from you.
May I delight in you the way you delight in me.
In the name of Jesus.
Amen.
