These two passages beautifully illustrate the difference between "noisy" external action and the deep, quiet power of contemplation. This prophecy describes a Servant whose strength is found in silence and gentleness, not in loudness or force. Contrary to worldly leaders who "shout or cry out" to command attention, the Servant (Jesus) works in a way that is so quiet he wouldn't break a "bruised reed." When we contemplate, we learn that God’s most transformative work often happens in the quietness, not the hype. God says in the scripture, “I will take hold of your hand,” and contemplation is exactly that: me letting God take my hand, and my response is to let go of the noise, to stop the “shouting” as I try to fix all that is wrong in this world. Letting God take my hand is his demonstration of true grace and justice that comes from an inner quiet and Spirit-filled strength.
In John 12, Mary is found at Jesus’ feet in silent adoration. She doesn't say a single word in this passage. Surrounding Mary is the ‘noise’ (e.g., Judas complaining about the waste of perfume, the chief priests are planning to murder, and the large crowds, well, were probably loud and annoying. However, Mary was not going to be deterred. She was silent. My journey into silence is frequently interrupted by all sorts of ‘noise’. It would be easy to give up, but I won’t because scriptures tell me that silence is not a lack of action, it is a deeper form of it.
Prayer:
Father in Heaven, let the Holy Spirit guide us as we try to be silent in a world full of noise.
Lead our feet to the moments and spaces where we can sit and contemplate your gifts, your sacrifice, and your mercy.
Amen.
