Day 42: The Betrayal

March 31

by Norma Flores Lovett

Readings:

Isa 49:1-6

John 13:21-38

Reflection:

These scriptures tell the story of the chosen one - the one we call Jesus. He was formed into a ‘sharpened sword’ or a double-edged sword and a ‘polished arrow’ with a specific purpose, a mission. The scripture says, “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob…I will make you a light for the Gentiles…that salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”

The betrayal by one of his own disciples must have been a devastating emotional pain that Jesus endured that night. He knew it would happen, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt. Jesus must have felt loneliness that no one should endure, yet sometimes we do. When his people and even his disciples failed him, He still remained focused on God’s mission. During this part of the Lenten season, I am reflecting on humility. In my times of silence and solitude, I am thinking of how I have betrayed the one who brings light to my life - Jesus.

Prayer:

Mighty God, cleanse my heart.

Help me to capture all thoughts that do not glorify you and take them to the foot of the cross.

Lord, thank you for your mercy and grace.

Thank you for your obedience that has allowed so many to reach eternal salvation.

Amen.

Song:

Betrayal, Poor Bishop Hooper. This song is on a whole album just released this year, walking through Holy Week in song.
